Pear and chocolate crumble
By naturopath Sandra Villella
Two squares of chocolate can go a long way
In the winter months we eat differently – warmer and heavier foods. Cold, dark winter nights can exacerbate feelings of sadness for some people and trigger comfort eating. Comfort eating is eating in response to emotions and is not harmful in moderation. If you frequently eat to make yourself feel better however, you are at risk of overeating which can lead to weight gain and other health issues.
This quick and easy dessert only takes a few minutes to prepare and is the perfect compromise on those nights when you feel like only chocolate will satisfy you. This dessert is a modified crumble with 2 squares of dark chocolate per person, (remarkably, it feels like so much more as you are eating it), avoiding the temptation of consuming a whole block of chocolate.
Nutrition
The recipe uses macadamia nut oil instead of butter. Macadamia nut oil is rich in monounsaturated fats (the good ones) instead of the saturated fats found in butter, as used in traditional crumble recipes. In fact macadamia nut oil can be used to substitute butter in cakes and muffins – generally use about 1/3 less oil than the stated butter quantity.
The coconut does contain saturated fat, so if you prefer, you can substitute freshly ground almonds instead. There is very little added sugar (maple syrup) needed in this recipe as pears are naturally sweet (and of course the chocolate is too).
Enjoy!
Ingredients2 ripe pears TIP: If only making a small quantity of crumble, try buying a small dark chocolate bar for this recipe rather than a whole block so you’re not tempted to eat the left-overs! MethodSlice pears and arrange in casserole dish. Break up the chocolate into small pieces and place on top of pears. Mix the dry ingredients together. Add the oil and maple syrup and rub in well with your fingertips to evenly distribute the ingredients, so the mixture resembles a crumble. Sprinkle crumble topping over the pears and bake in oven 180° for 20 minutes. If the crumble seems a bit dry, stir the pears and crumble before eating. |
